Edge tool sharpening the TORMEK way
| The TORMEK way is a dramatic improvement in edge tool sharpening. Anybody can
now sharpen and hone an edge with an accuracy previously not possible - much
more easily and faster. You can also shape the tool exactly to your needs. Even
such complicated shapes as
fingernail turning gouges,
spoon carving gouges and
oval skew chisels with a radiused edge are easily sharpened. And you can
exactly replicate a previous sharpening in less than a minute. The water cooled slow turning
grindstone
is in perfect harmony with the physical laws governing the steel tool ensuring
that the edge does not overheat and lose its hardness.
You finish the sharpening process right on the
leather honing wheel, which lets you polish the edge to a razor sharpness
with no need for bench stones.
The TORMEK method is safe. At the low speed you can fully control the
grinding operation. As no sparks are produced, there is no risk to your eyes and
you can safely use the machine in areas of high fire risk.

The versatile TORMEK Universal Support is the basis of the TORMEK system. It
is made of 12mm round steel and has a double mounting for
maximum stability. The Universal Support incorporates a micro adjust
for exact and fast fine setting.*

Functions:
The Universal Support can be placed in three positions:
The Universal Support can be placed either in the vertical sleeves or in a
horizontal base**. These two positions enable you to grind either
towards the edge or away from the edge.
The Universal Support can also be placed horizontally for honing with
jigs. Honing must always be done with the wheel running away
from the edge.

Horizontally for grinding away from the edge. |
Horizontally for honing away from the edge. |
* The micro adjust function was introduced Aug 2003. Older
machines can be upgraded by purchasing the new Universal Support separately
(US-105).
** The horizontal base was previously an accessory,
(XB-100),
but is since Aug 2001 mounted as standard.
The range of TORMEK Jigs enables the sharpening of just about every edge tool
in the workshop or home. Below is a summary of the range of jigs, click the jig

The TORMEK Grindstone has been developed to run at low speed in water. It's ceramically made (sintered at high temperature) and contains grains of
aluminium-oxide. The stone grinds very effectively and gives a fine finish to
the tool. It quickly grinds large tools for example plane irons, axes, scythes
and even HSS steel. The grit rating is 220 and the grain size is 0.06 mm.

The grindstone can be graded with the
TORMEK Stone Grader SP-650 to a finer surface corresponding to 1000 grit
suitable for fine grinding/sharpening. Then regraded back to 220 grit using the
reverse side of the stone grader.
The outside of the stone has a depressed centre and a machined flat, smooth
surface for
flattening the back of plane irons and wood chisels.

With the SuperGrind T-7, the large diameter 250 mm stone leaves a smaller hollow shape on the bevel
compared to a smaller dry grinding wheel. The large width, 50mm, gives you
a
generous surface to work on with your tools.
You hone away the burr on the leather honing wheel impregnated with the
TORMEK honing compound. The leather removes the burr gently like the barber's
leather strop, giving you a razor sharpness and a bevel polished to a mirror
finish.

Honing a palm held carving gouge using the
Short Tool Jig (SVS-32).
You can hone either free-hand or let the tool remain in the jig after the
grinding, so that the honing is carried out at exactly the same angle as the
previous grinding.
For a tool, which has the right shape and edge angle but has become dull, you
should go directly to the honing wheel. Since the tool is accurately guided in
the jig, you can press on the tool without any risk of rounding off the bevel.
This patented AngleMaster
(WM-200) has two functions: You can use it to set
the jig to the grindstone so that it grinds your tool to any desired
edge angle from 10° to 75° and you can use it to measure an
existing edge angle on a tool.

It is designed to work on any grindstone diameter
from 250mm down to 150mm. You achieve an exact setting irrespective
of the degree of stone wear.
The AngleMaster has two magnets for convenient fixing onto the housing of the
SuperGrind T-7.
